Accountants Training Scheme

INTRODUCTION

St George's Healthcare Finance Directorate wishes to promote the highest professional standards among all members of staff to ensure the delivery of a high quality professional service. It is therefore the policy of the Finance Directorate to recruit and promote staff willing and able to pursue professional training.

PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATION

The CIPFA qualification is the most appropriate qualification for Health Service Trainee Accountants to study and all trainees are encouraged to undertake training for this qualification.

TRAINING SUPPORT

The Finance Directorate offers support for professional training in three ways.

Day release from work is offered to all trainee accountants to study a recognised course at a college of further education.

Alternatively, if trainees wish to study at weekends or evenings then time off to attend a block study revision course of up to two weeks, will be supported.

Exam leave of two days per exam is also granted.

Financial support is offered towards the costs of the approved study course, the examination fees as well as subscription fees and the cost of relevant texts up to £100.00. This support is currently 80% of the above costs except for resits, which must be paid for by the trainees themselves.

The trainees contribution can be paid if they so wish by regular salary deduction over the duration of the course.

Job rotation is a key element of the training support offered by the Finance Directorate and it is anticipated that along with opportunities for promotion, this will provide trainees a varied range of work experience, suitable for their professional qualification.

PAYBACK CLAUSE

Trainee Accountants should note that they will be require to sign a payback clause prior to approval of any professional training.

This will oblige any trainee who leaves the Trust within two years of completing their training to payback the training costs incurred on their behalf except in the following circumstances where a trainee is leaving:-

to join other NHS organisations

due to ill health or redundancy

to have babies or look after their family

for other reasons which the Trust considers appropriate on compassionate grounds

Payback is calculated on a proportional basis on the number of months they are employed by the Trust within the 24 month period after completion of their studies.

This clause is merely to protect the investment that the Trust had made on behalf of the NHS in supporting the training of accountants.
